Which is better when filing taxes Single or divorced?

Dick Maisenbacher: There's no such filing status as "Divorced." Your marital status on Dec 31 determines your filing status for the year. If your divorce was final on or before Dec 31, 2008, your only option is Single, unless you qualify for Head of Household filing status.You qualify for Head of Household if you pay more than one half the cost of maintaining a home and a qualifying individual lives in the home. A qualifying individual would include your dependent child that you can claim an exemption for, or possibly an elderly parent that you support or some other close blood or family relative that you claim an exemption for....Show more

Terresa Tsasie: There is no "divorced" box to check on the Form 1040. You'll have to go as "single".

Lanita Reichman: There is no such tax status as "divorced".If your are divorced, you are "Single".If you are supporting a dependent, you may be "Head of Ho! usehold".
