answers 0:I broke a tooth that had a crown on it so I went to the dentist that placed the crown (which was done 2 yrs ago) so he found a paperclip on the back counter and cut a piece of and temperized the tooth in place with this unsanitary paperclip. By the next day I had a horrible infection so he said I needed to get the tooth pulled within the next couple of days. Because of the infection he caused with the paperclip I felt EVERYTHING he did to me.........it was so horrifying!!! He even yelled at me for squirming in the chair due to the pain. The worst part is that because I demanded some pain meds he reported me as having a drug problem and because I am a nurse I had to go through a chemical assessment because of his lie!!! Anyone have any thoughts on this? Does it sound like I have a law suit? Are paperclips supposed to be cemented into someones! mouth whether sterile or not???...Show moreanswers 1:I'm a dentist.First off, you don't know that he used a paperclip unless he specifically told you that he used a paperclip.Second, even if he used a paperclip, you don't know that the infection you developed was caused by the paperclip without culturing the bacteria in your infection and determining that the infection consists of bacteria that are not part of the normal oral flora.Third, even if the doctor used an actual dental post (rather than a paperclip), it would not have been sterile anyway. Placing a post into a tooth is not like putting a titanium rod into someone's femur. Granted, it would have been cleaner than a paperclip.Fourth, it takes more than a day to develop an infection from this alleged paperclip--and that's making the huge assumption that the bacteria from the paperclip had a way of getting down to the tip of the root and into the bone. Chances are high that the tooth was infected beforehand, and t! hat the mechanical trauma of having the tooth worked on caused! an acute flare-up of this pre-existing infection. Developing new infections after any surgeries usually occurs four or five days post-op.Fifth, you "demanded some pain meds"? You don't demand anything from your doctor, no matter what his/her field is. You ask for them, and if he/she feel it's appropriate for you to have them, then he/she prescribe them for you. That's how it works. Perhaps the doctors you work for are spineless pushovers, but most of us don't let our patients dictate what medications we prescribe. You know what kind of people "demand" pain meds? Drug seekers. As dentists, we encounter such patients with some frequency.Sixth, how do you know he "reported you as having a drug problem"? And to whom did he report you? And, how did your work find out about it? This part of your story sounds extremely dubious. In fact, your entire story sounds dubious...and that's without hearing the doctor's version of the events! Now, I certainly believe that you ha! d an unpleasant experience at the doctor's office, however, I think you are trying to escalate it into something more out of sheer anger. Your entire question seems more like a venting session than an accurate account of what actually happened.Unless you can prove he used a paperclip, you have no case. If you can prove it, you won't get much anyway....answers 2:Regardless of whether or not the dentist used a paper clip, the fact that you were squirming in the chair and demanded/asked for pain meds should have been an indication to the dentist that there was a problem. While I agree that the paper clip did not cause the infection- the meer introduction of the object did not help the matter- it just elevated it. There are guidelines for sanitary instructions. Just because a patient is in pain and requests pain medicine does not make him/her a drug addict. While the paper clip thing is a little strange, a dental professional refusing to provide pain medication thus invoki! ng unnecessary pain unto a patient should also be looked into here. If! doctors can get lawsuits from the same treatment- then dentists need to be held to the same standards.Report your dentist to the state licensing board....answers 3:Never! This doesn't sound like a very sain dentist! They are provided with plenty of instruments to help them in just about any situation! Yelling at you for your pain? No, not right. I would call my lawyer for a consult. I would also see if the assistant noticed it as well that way you can get a possible witness. Goodluckanswers 4:WHOA!my dads a dentist and he said sue the bastard!paperclips ARE NOT supposed to be used at all during dentist work,
