Maria Devenney: Well, I'm not expert, so I'm sure someone can give you a more det! ailed answer than this, but I'm always a rail fan, and would love someday work as a locomotive engineer. From what I can gather, you should start low, working as like a brakeman, track worker/builder, conductor, or yard worker, and wait until there's an opening for an on-board position. Take the company's training course, and get a job working as an engineer. For high-speed rail, most likely you'd have to have experience in freight first, and then apply for a job with a passenger company, where you might get some additional training on the differences when working in high-speed (the principles of driving a high-speed locomotive are the same as a diesel-electric, but it will react differently, and would take getting used to).I've also heard of technical colleges that offer courses in the railroad industry, and although they aren't required, would help to jump-start your career....Show more
Vernon Martorana: You need to take engineering classes, math, physics, etc. At so! me point you will have to decide if you want to be a mechanica! l or an electrical engineer. Check out some university web sites to see what you have to do to be accepted. I work for a large German engineering firm and audited one of our sister divisions that designs and manufactures light rail. They have a five year backlog in orders in spite of the world economy so I think you are going to enter a field where engineering skills will be in demand. Study hard and take all of the math and science courses you can. Good Luck....Show more
