Advice on how to go about selling car after failing NYS (New York State) safety inspection?

Particia Thorton: Im sure you could sell it to a junkyard or for parts. Otherwise, Im not sure. I don't know if the seller of a car in NY is responsible for it passing safety or not.

Minh Lefrancois: Title fees are not refundable. At most you're entitled to the registration fees, about $30-$60 depending if you paid for one year or two. Just advertise the car for sale as is and and mention "needs brakes and tires". Your choice if you want to bother applying for the registration refund. Keep your insurance in force and your California tags on the car so prospective buyers can legally drive it.

James Langmyer: You should be okay as long as you tell them the reason it failed inspection. You won't make anything on it. Honestly, if you couldn't afford a set of tires and brakes, why did you buy a car? Those are routine maintenance items.

Charissa Riley: Sell it before the registration expires - the buyer will want a test ride/drive and it would be better! to have it properly registered and insured for even a short ride (without a test drive you are selling a pig in a poke and it will be worth much less to buyers). TIres and brakes while expensive shouldn't put off most buyers too much but expect discount the price heavily from blue book values - just because of the aggravation of getting the work done as well as the cost.
