Pearlie Medora: Actually, the smartest thing to do would be to speak with a Navy or Coast Guard recruiter and tell them you'd like to join as an officer. Ask them what kind of scholarships they offer in exchange for service. They may have you do some aptitude tests so that you can tailor your major towards what you'd be doing once you've graduated. The obvious answer is Oceanography. But, you may find that anything goes. I know he's Army, but Colin Powell's undergrad degree was Geology. He seemed to do ok for himself. As far as post-military careers, if you go in as an officer, you may choose to do career military, even following that Colin Powell route and going into leadership or diplomacy. Or, you may choose to leave the military and take up work with a civilian contractor. Or, you may choose to do research. Or, you could choose to work with any company that deals with the ocean, from shipping companies to oil companies to Greenpeace. One of my parents was car! eer military and after he retired (AF Colonel), he had made enough contacts with civilian contractors that he had plenty of job offers tgo keep him busy his last 8 years of employment. Another relative put in his 15 years and went straight into civilan contracting in his field. For officers who have been well trained and who specialize, civilian jobs are not too hard to find. Good Luck!!...Show more

They journeys that you would go on as a ferry or tanker captain would be boring at most parts because it's all open ocean ahead of you. Also, make sure you don't get sea sick. Once you do those things, you should apply to become a ferry captai! n. Then, work your way up to a cruse liner or an oil tanker...! .Show more
