Can you do Graphic Design with degree in Visual Arts?

Vickie Clampett: YES. The great thing about graphic design, and the worst thing, is that there is no official certification required to practice graphic design. The main criteria determining your success is your portfolio -- and that is why so many people choose to go to a design school or take enough course work within the art department of their school to develop a portfolio. If you can show people what you can do and succeed in convincing someone that you have the skill and talent they need, you're on your way. The main drawback to your plan might be keeping up with the software. Design departments are likely to work in Adobe Creative Suite or some combination of Adobe with Quark Xpress, an entry level position may even require a test of your skill in using these tools.Honestly, actual literacy is an under-appreciated skill. I think many design departments would be happy to have a designer with the capacity to catch more of their grammatical and typographical errors. De! signers (and I include myself in this) are notorious for their dyslexia.Best of success in pursuing your plan....Show more

Robt Betker: If you are good at both English and graphic design, you may want to think about a career in a more managerial or producer type of creative role. Design job descriptions and terminology vary a lot, especially from different countries. But perhaps do some research on design management, creative producers, editorial designers and so on. There's some information here - http://www.designtalkboard.com/design-articles/des...But keep in mind that most of these roles are for more senior designers, so you may need to work up to them. But also, doing some work experience in different companies may mean that by the time you are ready for the market place, you will want to specialise in one rather than the other? My 2 cents worth...Good luck....Show more
